The Power of Yoga

There is new scientific proof that yoga has healing powers.

Have you noticed how you feel when you take a moment in Sukhasana (Easy Pose) after your yoga practice?

One of my greatest joy in teaching yoga is to witness the transformation and happiness on the faces of my cherished yoga students.
What do I mean by transformation? Each day is different and so we tune in to what we need in our practice. Here are a few examples. The transformation takes place when we started our practice feeling stressed and leave feeling calm and peaceful. It takes place when we started with back pain and leave being pain-free. It shows when we commit to our practice, set an intention, stay open and curious, and leave feeling energetic and happy.

Yoga has definitely been a light on my path and so another great joy of being a yoga instructor is to share the magic of yoga with my students.
While they are their own teachers as they listen to their bodies, I am honored to guide them through a safe and delightful practice.

“Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self realization. Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day to day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”
~ B.K.S. Iyengar

As we go through our session we practice mindfulness by enjoying the present moment, connecting to our breath, and witnessing of our mind, body and emotions.
Yoga supports us in becoming aware of our thoughts, eases stress and tension and connects us to our emotions and needs.
As we move through the graceful sequence of Sun or Moon Salutations, where each pose counteracts the one before, we are taking our bodies through a well balanced and complete workout.

However, in my opinion yoga goes beyond the physical. By practicing yoga we are building strengths, flexibility and balance in our body, mind, emotions and spirit! Ah, the magic of yoga!

Aside from the quotes and my personal excitement about yoga I am happy to share an article with you that confirms the healing power of yoga. This recent study (“New Study Shows Yoga Has Healing Powers“)  reveals that a regular yoga practice enhances relaxation, boosts energy and reduces inflammation.

And then I found another insightful article on the “Chopra Centered Lifestyle Page” by Adam Brady about the benefits of Restorative Yoga. Here is a wonderful excerpt but please make sure to read the full article “10 Benefits of Restorative Yoga“. If you are interested in giving Restorative Yoga a try, please join us for our Tuesday Yin Yoga class.

“The overall calming effect on the nervous system sets a deeply relaxing tone for the class that comforts your mind and body down to the cellular level.”

“Restorative yoga opens us up to new levels of self-exploration and contemplation, allowing your inner being to shine forth.”

“As a tool for self-transformation, restorative yoga facilitates the integration of all the layers of life—environmental, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual—culminating in the goal of all goals, awakening to your own divine nature.”

So many reasons to continue or start your regular yoga practice!

Namasté!

“Yoga is almost like music in a way; there’s no end to it.”
