Welcome to the follow-up of our previous blog. We’ll continue to explore further secret tools for self-empowerment.

How have the first two suggestions been working for you?

Let’s look at our next one…

3. Don’t Take Things Personally

“How much time he gains
who does not look to see what his neighbor says or does or thinks,
but only at what he does himself, to make it just and holy.”

~ Marcus Aurelius

Believe me, for most of my life I took things personally all the time. And the result was not very fun. I would spend precious time pondering about what the person could have meant, why they said it, if they tried to avoid me, didn’t like me anymore, etc.
It wasn’t until I started studying holistic therapies, that I began to understand that we all have our own views, ideas and thoughts on things. Our upbringing and personal preferences make us live in our own stories or dreams. To make that more clear just bring a few people together, look at some pictures and then let everyone describe what they saw. You’ll be surprise by how different everyone may have experienced what was shown, the colors, image, background and meaning.

We assume that others must think the way we do, because we are right ;), and when they don’t we are disappointed and take it that they are behaving in a way to spite us. However, we couldn’t be further from the truth.

Whatever somebody says, does or thinks comes from their own reality. It is a reflection of their own truth and has nothing to do with you. It is always just about them, not you. When you feel hurt, then they may have triggered a wound in you, but the wound was already there and you are in charge to heal it.
Nobody is responsible for how you feel, but yourself. When you are happy, you probably don’t take things personally but focus on the joy. When you are afraid or in doubt, the slightest comment may throw you off.

Don’t assume things, refrain from creating your story about things. If needed, kindly inquire to clarify what was being said and meant, then stay open to the answer.
Again, you are not defined by what others think about you. Be authentic. Love and accept yourself. Do what you love. Meditate, garden, knit, paint, sing, dance, hug your loved ones, cuddle a puppy, practice yoga, etc.
In addition surround yourself with people who motivate, love, support, inspire and encourage you.
You are in charge of your happiness!
